Lesbian & Bisexual Women Over 50% of families in the world are headed by women – no one knows how many are lesbian/bisexual or how many of the women living with men are lesbian/bisexual. Most lesbian/bisexual women do the same caring work that other women do, looking after families, communities, each other and ourselves but our work is hidden because of fear of discrimination and violence against us if we are public. Though we work very hard for no or low wages or welfare benefits, most of us are not able to be economically independent. 'Coming out' is particularly difficult for those of us who live in countries of the South – housing and other resources are so scarce that we stay with our parents or other relatives. Some of us emigrate in order to be independent. Those of us who succeed in living on our own or with a woman partner are often poorer as we don’t have access to a man’s wage and women's wages are lower than men's. While repression and discrimination continue to rage, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender movements have transformed the world we live in, in a growing number of countries, making it possible for more people, especially young people, to have same sex relationships and call themselves bisexual, lesbian, gay, queer. . . or refuse any labels and have more choices about whom we have relationships with. Wages Due Lesbians has been part of the movement against discrimination since we first started in 1975.
